Understanding the relationship between Kapahaka and heart health: An integrated methodological approach
In Collaboration with: Te Kapa Haka o Ngāti Ranginui
With support from the Heart Foundation NZ
Duration: 2025
Purpose:
Kapa haka, a dynamic and diverse expression of Māori culture encompassing various traditional performing arts, is not only culturally significant but also holds potential health benefits. This research project aims to delve into the impact of participating in kapa haka on heart health, merging scientific and Māori perspectives to gain a comprehensive understanding. The study unfolds in four phases: initial heart health assessments, naturalistic observation of a kapa haka group's training period, engaging narrative interviews with kaihaka (performers), and a heart health survey conducted at Te Matatini Festival in 2025. By amalgamating quantitative data with qualitative insights, the research endeavors to contribute substantively to the evidence base surrounding kapa haka's potential to enhance health. Through this synthesis of data and personal narratives, the study seeks to inspire and inform future interventions aimed at promoting heart health within Aotearoa New Zealand.
