Love letter to the Pharmacist:
Strengthening Pharmacist-Whānau Communication
Enhancing Patient Information in Rural Medicine Delivery through Culturally Relevant and Holistic Approaches.
With support from Pūtahi Manawa, Heart Foundation NZ
Duration: 2025
Purpose:
Rural Māori communities on the East Coast of Aotearoa have highlighted significant gaps in the delivery of medication information when parcels are sent via courier. Whānau report receiving medicines without sufficient accompanying details on their purpose, expected outcomes, and potential side effects, impacting their ability to understand and engage with their health care. Our aim is to design, implement, and evaluate a culturally relevant and user-friendly information framework that can be included in medicine parcels delivered to rural Māori whānau on the East Coast of the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, specifically, those residing in the Tairāwhiti district, improving the understanding and engagement with prescribed treatments.
