Tino Rangatiratanga during the COVID-19 Pandemic:
Examining the kaupapa Māori response within the Western and Eastern Bay of Plenty
In collaboration with: Poutiri Trust and Te Puna Ora o Mataatua Health With support from The Ministry of Health
Duration: 2022 - 2023
Purpose:
The ‘Tino Rangatiratanga during the COVID-19 pandemic’ research – funded by Ministry of Health provides an in-depth case study of two Kaupapa Māori Bay of Plenty health providers, Te Puna Ora o Mataatua and Poutiri Trust, and how they planned and implemented their COVID-19 community response, including their role in Te Apārangi Tūpore from March 2020.
This research examined the strengths and resources unique to Kaupapa Māori services in meeting the needs of their communities during a health crisis. It highlighted the barriers, constraints and gaps in our current systems that impede on Kaupapa Māori services when faced with a significant health crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
